Tower Defense

4.3(41,652 ratings)·3.5M plays·strategy

Tower Defense is the classic strategy game where every dollar matters. Creeps march along a winding path toward your castle — stop them by placing Gun, Cannon, and Frost towers on the grass. Survive 20 escalating waves, defeat 4 boss waves, and protect your lives. Free in your browser, no signup.

Controls

Tap a tower type at the bottom to select it, then tap any empty grass tile to build. Press Start Wave when ready. Bosses appear every 5 waves.

Tips & Strategy

  • Place towers at corners — creeps spend the most time near them, which means more shots per pass.
  • Build one Frost tower near the start. Slowing the wave gives all your damage towers more time to fire.
  • Don't spend all your gold the first wave. Save 80–100 gold for emergencies and tower upgrades on wave 3+.
  • Cannon towers shine against grouped waves — the splash damage hits multiple creeps per shot.
  • Gun towers stay relevant the whole game thanks to fast fire rate — don't underestimate them.
  • Boss waves at 5, 10, 15, 20 have massive HP. Concentrate your firepower on the longest stretch of path the boss will travel.
  • Between waves, look at the next wave's preview. If it's air-heavy or fast, adjust your tower mix BEFORE pressing Start.

How to Play Tower Defense — The Lane-Defense Classic

Tower Defense is the strategy game where you fight time, not skill alone. Enemies (called "creeps" in the genre) walk along a fixed winding path from the start of the map to your castle. Every creep that reaches the castle costs you a life. Run out of lives and the game ends.

Your only weapon: towers. Place them on grass tiles next to the path. They fire automatically at any creep in range. Stronger towers cost more gold. Smarter placement matters more than raw spending.

The towers

🔫 Gun Tower ($40) — Cheap, fast, single-target. The workhorse of the early game. A row of Gun towers near a corner will shred the first 5 waves with no problem.

💣 Cannon Tower ($80) — Slow rate of fire but heavy splash damage. Perfect for grouped waves and tightly bunched creeps. Place these at long straight stretches where multiple creeps will be in the blast radius.

❄️ Frost Tower ($60) — Low damage but slows every creep it hits for several seconds. The most under-rated tower. One Frost at the start of the path effectively doubles every other tower's damage by giving them more time to fire.

Gold management

Every kill earns gold. The amount depends on the creep type and the wave number. Wave 1 grunts give 4 gold each; wave 19 elites give 25+. Bosses on waves 5, 10, 15, 20 give huge bonuses (50–200 gold).

The biggest beginner mistake is spending every coin every wave. Keep a buffer of 80–150 gold for two reasons:

  1. Emergency placement — if a wave breaks through, you need cash on hand to plug the hole mid-wave.
  2. Upgrades — by wave 8 you should be upgrading rather than placing new towers. Upgrading a Gun is cheaper than placing two.

Corners are gold

A creep on a straight stretch is in your tower's range for a few seconds. A creep going around a tight corner is in range for 6–10× as long. Always put your first 3 towers at corners.

Even better: a corner with two adjacent grass tiles, where you can stack two towers covering the same bend.

A solid opening for wave 1

  1. Build 2 Gun towers at the first corner.
  2. Save the remaining gold.
  3. Start wave 1. Earn ~50 gold from kills.
  4. Place 1 Frost tower right at the path start.
  5. Add a 3rd Gun at the second corner before wave 2.

This setup costs $160 total. You'll have ~$30 buffer. By wave 3 you'll have enough to add a Cannon at the longest straight stretch.

Boss strategy

Bosses have so much HP that they will walk through any small tower setup. The fix: concentrate your fire. Pick the longest stretch of path the boss will travel, build 3–4 towers along it (especially Cannons), and ideally place a Frost tower at the start of that stretch.

Don't try to kill the boss instantly — kill it over the longest possible distance.

Late game (waves 15+)

By now you should have at least 8 towers, most upgraded twice. Your main job is reactive: watch the wave preview, identify the threat, and add one more upgrade or one more Cannon in the right spot. Patience beats panic.

Frequently asked questions

How many waves are there?+

20 escalating waves. Bosses appear at waves 5, 10, 15, and 20. Survive all 20 and you win the level.

Can I sell or upgrade towers?+

Each tower can be upgraded for additional damage and range. Sell value is partial refund — plan placements carefully because you lose gold on every sell.

Which tower is the best?+
